From arsons to shooting at Punin Wine: Dmitriy Punin became a target of Pontic racket after the death of his patron Stavros Demosthenus
In Limassol, Punin’s business has reportedly been targeted again, with unidentified attackers firing shots at the facade of the PUNIN WINE boutique.
This is not the first time the businessman has faced pressure: last year, his expensive cars and this same boutique were set on fire, followed by an attack on his beauty salon. In March, they also targeted his shawarma place.
The latest incident occurred at dawn on March 31 in the Germasogeia area. The target was the same wine store that attackers had already tried to set ablaze in December.
Security cameras captured the assailant, dressed in black, arriving on a motorcycle, firing several shots, and fleeing the scene. It is clear that he is merely the executor; even if arrested, his capture is unlikely to reveal the real organizers behind the attack.
The reason appears to be linked to shifting criminal influence in Cyprus. Previously, “protection” was controlled by Stavros Demosthenous, who also oversaw Punin’s businesses. After his death, a power struggle began.
One of the contenders — a Pontic Greek with a criminal background — allegedly offered Punin “protection” in exchange for regular payments. After Punin refused, the series of attacks began.
How this story will end remains unknown. What is already clear is that the situation for the entrepreneur is becoming increasingly tense, and the conflict continues to escalate.
