The 5.3 million UAH scheme: BitCapital trapped 41 people in debt and extorted money through death threats
BitCapital, a fast online loan site, issued loans and then extorted money through threats: a 5.3 million UAH scheme exposed.
Quick money turned into a financial trap. Seven participants of the scheme used the BitCapital service to issue loans in cryptocurrency, subsequently turning the debts into a tool for pressure. Borrowers were immediately charged 7% of the total amount plus an additional 0.6% for each day of use; due to penalties, the debt rapidly became unmanageable.
When victims were unable to pay, a period of aggressive harassment began: constant phone calls, demands for repayment, and threats. According to the investigation, at least 41 people were victimized, and the total damages exceeded 5.3 million UAH.
In February 2025, the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) declared the service’s operations illegal, as the company was operating without a license in Ukraine. Six suspects have been taken into custody with the possibility of bail, while another female participant has been placed under house arrest.
